I’d be hard pressed to say I was more excited about an event other than the upcoming Crested Butte Ultra Enduro by the Big Mountain Enduro crew.
“Expect to average 25 miles per day, 5,100 feet of climbing and 6,700 feet of descending, with two or three big stages per day.”
These numbers are on par with that of both the famed Trans-Sylvania Epic and the Breck Epic. But here, we’re gonna be hauling around enduro-specific riggery. My BMC Trailfox 29 clocks in at 32 lbs. Oh, and my 1×10 drivetrain grannies at a 1:1 ratio. 5100′ @ ~10k ft x 32lbs ÷ 1:1 = Ouch. (Make sure you use your PEMDAS on that one.) Do I really care? No! Cause this is a mother truckin’ Ultra Enduro and it’s “not for the faint of heart. Repeat, not for the faint of heart..“. Thanks for the fair warning, Sarah. Also, this rig gives me the intense pleasure of not giving a single fuck on the way down; and that makes the world right.
Here’s the breakdown of the build:
Stans NoTubes FlowEX 29. Dual chamber in the back. (Queue devious laugh.)
Front: Maxxis Minion DHR II 2.3 3C EXO TR, Rear: Maxxis High Roller II 2.3 EXO TR
RS Pike Solo 29 150mm, 51mm offset, 2 AVR pucks, 65psi
Cane Creek DBAirCS, 110psi, I won’t bore you with the turns/clicks.
Hope Tech3 E4 203/183mm, awesome.
SRAM X0 drivetrain
MRP Bling Ring 36T
RS Reverb 150
Syntace Vector Carbon Low 5
WTB Silverado Carbon
This all equates to trails becoming slightly altered with the passing of this bike cycle; for that, I love it.
So, with this race… The announcement of an EWS round to be held in the same general vicinity in 2015 has got a few of the EWS shmoes coming out for a comprehensive look at the area. Jerome Clementz and Curtis Keene are two examples, and while these guys might be some of the nicest guys on the circuit I don’t plan on ‘liking’ getting my ass handed to me by them for 5 days in a row. Guess I’ll get over that just like I get over JB and Barry finishing an hour ahead of me at the TSEpic… I won’t divulge the details on this. And, after all, this is a dedicated Enduro™, so going slow means going fast, right? We’ll see how that works out when we’re getting hailed on at 12k ft. One thing is for sure, this is going to be really garsh darned epic, and racing these trails blind is going to be equally hairball! Hopefully we get treated with an experience that becomes known as one of those bucket list rides like the Trans-Sylvania and Breck Epic. Stay tuned for how this one goes down.
